So here we are, however many months in to the pandemic. I am fortunate enough to still have my day job, and set my intentions and expectations from the beginning that I would be slow building this brand and honing in a bit of a different voice on each platform where I was selling.
I am happy to report that nearly all my platforms do have at least a few sales on them, with only one hold out that I admittedly need to pay better attention to and refine the voice in that shop. I have had some good moments lately and feel like my original plan to do more promotion and work on these in 2021 was the right approach.
This has given me a lot of good time to develop each shop and learn a little bit more about the nuances of each. I can chop a design off a shop without really worrying how many people saw it (admittedly I still have some of my just bizarre first ones on a shop because they are nostalgic...)
Lately, I have been finding a lot of inspiration in streetwear and street art, like graffiti. I have a few designs that I have released lately that have a bit of a punk rock or grunge vibe to them, and this is a vein that I am thoroughly enjoying. Don't get me wrong, I love my pun art and have released a lot of that lately too. But that's a different story for another day.
These two pictures are new products on my Kin Custom Shop. I love how customizable products are on this platform. There are some items that I like to have full prints on, and others where I like to do sleeve prints only.
I wanted this one to invoke a sense of an urban scene with dripping graffiti threatening to tell the stories of the city. It's a design that you should find more secrets in each time you wear it. Click either picture to shop the look.
Sticking in my grunge mood of late, this sweater now holds a special place for me. The day after I uploaded this, someone found it and bought one. I was floored. It had to be organic traffic through the Kin Custom site because I had not really even promoted it anywhere yet.
I like the punchy colors with the concrete look of the whole thing. This design also taught me a great lesson about further breaking apart a design for a shop where customization is everything. But more on that another day.
I can't even begin to explain how much I have learned about the frustrations of getting things to somewhat line up at seams. This design happens to be really forgiving on that. It's also that much harder to do when you are talking about print and drop-ship versus sewing your own things. So if you ever buy something from me, I can promise you I have tried as hard as possible to make the seams look right!
This grunge streetwear design comes in pants, shirts, and hoodies and is more of a limited collection than some of my other patterns. That has been another lesson learned- not every print is made for every item.
And then, there was the moment that I nearly hyperventilated in the bathroom at work over- my Fall Out Boy fan art was accepted! I, a mere mortal, have made official Fall Out Boy merch...floored.
And I have already sold a few of this design! One was a friend, sure, but another was someone states away from me. I love the bubbly blue letters over the band members. Teenage me is living her best life through current me. This was a huge boost for me in what has been a crazy, wonky year.
Let's see what happens in the last few weeks!
