We lived in apartments for a while, me and my almost-soon-to-be-probably-should-get-started-on-the-paperwork-but-we-forget-because-it-is-so-amicable ex-husband. Oh right, if I haven't mentioned that before, I am starting in on a divorce. But it is super friendly and not your average one, but that's another story for another day.
Anyway, the fern. We lived in apartments for a while that were just lovely. I really liked being there, our dog probably did not because of all of the other dogs barking in her face on walks, but I certainly had a great time in it. The finishes were nice, the area was walkable, the staff were fantastic, but the best part of the apartment was Blanche.
Blanche was an older woman who lived on the first floor of my building. She was in an apartment with a little screened patio on it and she was almost always out when I was walking the dog. Stella, my dog, is a gorgeous black German Shepherd that we got within the first year or so of being together. When she was a puppy, I always had a big flower on her collar. Usually a big pink or purple one with a jewel on it.
I could not, however, convince Blanche that Stella was a girl. So I would always walk by her apartment and she would tell me what a good boy Stella was being, and ultimately I just rolled with it. Stella did not complain, she is a very modern dog like that.
Blanche always had the best plants on her porch. She usually had a stunning fern and a pot of petunias or similar. She would be watering them when I walked by and we would talk about her life, my life, Stella's life, everyone's life. It was always a bright spot in my day. But after a while, we would have conversations with Blanche at the mailboxes or trash area about where she lived and whether we could help her find her apartment.
Blanche's kids moved her out ultimately. On the day they were getting her stuff, my sister-in-law happened to walk by her apartment and they asked her if she wanted the plants because they couldn't come with them. I had about...200 succulents...at the time (also another story) so she told them I would be happy to care for them. I was then the proud owner of a stunning fern, a pot of petunias, and a plant stand.
I was thinking about this all the other day, and it led me to create Best Ferns Forever. There is really something special about the relationships that we create, even those that we may not consider a best friend. I really think that with so much going on in the world, it is critical that we celebrate and nurture our roots, our connections, and the things that help us grow.
And tell people when they bring joy to your life. I sincerely hope that Blanche knew that I enjoyed talking to her. I hope that I managed to convey that, because I don't think that I ever expressed that in words. Best Ferns Forever is a fun print that helps you tell someone that they are meaningful to you and maybe give them a chuckle at the same time.
You can find this print on a range of products in my RedBubble Shop.
